Artificial Intelligence in Logistics: The Invisible Operational Power of a New Era

Artificial intelligence has become one of the most talked-about topics in the business world over the past few years. However, from the perspective of the logistics sector, I believe it would be insufficient to view the subject solely as a technological advancement.

This is because logistics, by its very nature, is a sector where data, speed, planning, and coordination converge. Consequently, the impact of artificial intelligence is not limited to specific operational areas; it extends across a broad spectrum—from decision-making mechanisms to customer experience, and from cost management to sustainability.

At this point, artificial intelligence is no longer just a topic for the future. It has become an active part of logistics operations in many regions of the world.

Warehouse operations, in particular, are one of the most visible areas of this transformation. Thanks to AI-powered robotic systems, autonomous mobile robots, and computer vision technologies, product picking, packaging, and inventory management processes can be carried out much more quickly and accurately. It is well known that large-scale global logistics companies have significantly increased their efficiency and reduced operational error rates to minimal levels using these technologies.

In fact, we have begun to see concrete examples of this transformation not only on a global scale but also in Turkey. We at Kıta Logistics have recently implemented an infrastructure investment aimed at digitizing warehouse processes and making them more efficient, particularly in our retail logistics operations. Thanks to a mobile app-supported system integrated with ERP systems, processes from product receipt to shipment can now be tracked in real time, and we have begun to achieve significant gains in inventory accuracy, operational speed, and field efficiency.

A similar transformation is taking place in the transportation sector. Artificial intelligence algorithms capable of simultaneously evaluating numerous variables—such as traffic density, weather conditions, delivery windows, and road conditions—make it possible to determine the most optimal routes. As a result, not only are delivery times shortened, but fuel consumption and carbon emissions are also reduced.

Another key area of application is demand forecasting and capacity planning. By analyzing historical data, market trends, and external factors together, more accurate forecasts can be generated. This not only increases capacity utilization rates but also helps prevent unnecessary inventory costs.

One of the areas experiencing the fastest growth recently is generative AI applications. Especially given the logistics sector’s highly documentation-intensive nature, we are witnessing a significant transformation in freight quotes, customs documents, bills of lading, and customer communication processes. Many tasks that previously took hours can now be completed in minutes.

Looking at Turkey, it’s fair to say the process is still in its early stages. However, we’re seeing a surge in AI investments, particularly among large-scale logistics companies and corporate supply chain structures. Areas such as warehouse management, route planning, customer service, and data analytics are emerging as the first steps in this transformation.

That said, I believe the real question is not what AI is doing today, but what it will do in the next five years.

This is because AI is no longer merely a technology that offers suggestions. In the coming period, we will encounter new-generation systems defined as “Agentic AI.” These systems will not only perform analyses but will also evolve into structures capable of taking action within specific rules and authority limits.

We anticipate that human intervention will gradually decrease in processes such as evaluating a freight request, generating suitable transportation alternatives, preparing price quotes, and even making certain operational decisions.

Another significant development will be digital twin technologies. In the future, companies will be able to create digital copies of their supply chains to simulate potential risks, bottlenecks, and crisis scenarios before operations take place. This will provide a much higher level of foresight in decision-making processes.

The role of artificial intelligence will also continue to grow in the area of sustainability. As the impact of the European Green Deal and carbon regulations increases, it will become increasingly important to identify not only the fastest or lowest-cost route but also the operational model with the lowest carbon emissions. Artificial intelligence will help manage both environmental and commercial goals simultaneously.

In my view, the winners of the coming era will not be limited to companies that invest in technology. The companies that will truly make a difference are those that can place artificial intelligence at the center of their business processes, manage data effectively, and align their employees’ skills with this transformation.

The logistics sector has always been open to change. The AI transformation we are facing today represents a new phase of this change.

I believe that over the next five years, competition will not be shaped solely by price, capacity, or transit times. We are entering a new era where companies that can interpret data, accelerate decision-making processes, and make their operations more predictable will stand out.

Perhaps the most important point is this:

Artificial intelligence will not replace logistics. However, companies that use artificial intelligence correctly may begin to replace those that do not.
